- Book Synopsis
- A stand-out new edition of the award-winning third novel in the globally bestselling Chaos Walking trilogy. Three armies march on New Prentisstown. The New World is at war. Todd and Viola are caught in the middle, with no chance of escape. How can they hope to stop the fighting? How can there ever be peace when they're so hopelessly outnumbered? And if war makes monsters of men, what terrible choices await? Winner of the Carnegie Medal for Writing. To celebrate the upcoming release of Piper at the Gates of Dusk, a new novel in the iconic world of Chaos Walking, in April 2026, this new edition features a fresh jacket, sprayed edges and an additional short story: Snowscape, reintroducing us to old characters and with a gripping twist in Todd and Viola's relationship. "Ness doesn't just tell stories - he illuminates the human heart." - Cassandra Clare "A masterpiece of speculative fiction" - Neal Shusterman "A touchstone for powerful young adult literature. Inventive, gut-wrenching, and all-consuming, this is an unforgettable coming-of-age reading experience." - Chloe Gong "An epic journey through both a science-fiction world of extraordinary imagination and an emotional landscape of gripping intensity." - Adrian Tchaikovsky "Intelligent, compelling and utterly devastating, Chaos Walking is one of the seminal YA series of this century." - Juno Dawson

- Patrick Ness was born in the USA, and now lives in London. He writes both novels and short stories for adults and children, but is best known for his books for young adults. His first books for teenagers make up the Chaos Walking trilogy, of which the first book, The Knife of Never Letting Go, won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize and the Booktrust Teenage Prize, followed by The Ask and the Answer, which won the Costa Award. All three titles in the trilogy were shortlisted for the prestigious Carnegie Medal, an unprecedented event, and in 2011 the third title, Monsters of Men, won the award. Patrick's sixth book, A Monster Calls, was based on an original idea by Siobhan Dowd and illustrated by Jim Kay. It won every major prize in children's fiction, including the Galaxy National Book Award, the UKLA Book Award and the Red House Children's Book Award. In 2012 it became the first book ever to win both the Carnegie Medal and the Kate Greenaway Medal. Patrick has also written the screenplay for the film of A Monster Calls. Directed by Juan Antonio Bayona and starring Liam Neeson, Sigourney Weaver and Felicity Jones, the film was released in 2016. The first film in the Chaos Walking series was released in 2021.
