Noam Chomsky is widely regarded as one of the most important thinkers of the modern era. Born into a Jewish immigrant family in Philadelphia, USA, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania. Chomsky is also renowned for his outspoken criticism of contemporary capitalism, mass media, and American foreign policy. He opposed the Vietnam War and was arrested several times and placed on Richard Nixon's list of political opponents. Chomsky has also criticised the invasion of Iraq and US support for Israel.
