About J.K. Rowling

More commonly known as her pen name J.K. Rowling, British writer Joanne Kathleen Rowling began writing fantasy stories from a young age. She is best known as the author of the Harry Potter book series. Inspiration for the Harry Potter books struck on a delayed train between Manchester and London, when the characters of Harry, Ron and Hermione first came to her. She finished writing the first draft of Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone in June 1995 and the manuscript was famously rejected by 12 publishers before it was picked up by Bloomsbury. The next 3 books in the series were published in quick succession, and the series finale Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was published in July 2007. The Harry Potter books have sold over 600 million copies worldwide, and have inspired a hit movie series. In addition to her children's books, J.K. Rowling also writes a crime and mystery series for adults - the Detective Strike series - as Robert Galbraith.
