- Book Synopsis
- Each year, approximately 140 million babies are born. Globally, 2.3 million children died during the neonatal period. Infectious diseases are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, accounting for 33% of neonatal deaths. This book is unique as it focuses on preventing infection in neonates. It is written by a leading global expert with practical experience in understanding, detecting, and preventing newborn infections. The first two sections of the book focus on preventing infections during pregnancy and childbirth. Sections three to five focus on strategies to prevent infection during the postnatal period. According to estimates, between 6% and 50% of newborns develop infections while in the neonatal unit, and this book offers practical, evidence-based, and cost-effective advice to prevent infections in newborns. The text is accompanied by illustrations that make it easier for health and care workers to understand and apply basic infection prevention and control interventions. This book is essential for all medical, nursing, midwifery, and other staff caring for newborns in the community, neonatology, and obstetric units.
