Read an exclusive introduction fromThe Lies Between Us
The Lies Between Us is about the unique bond that sisters share, and the ways in which that bond is tested when complicated emotions and situations are thrown into the mix. At the heart of this novel are three very different sisters, each grappling with their own issues, many of which are cloaked in secrecy and hidden away.
The novel looks at the very distinct ways that Susannah, Lucy and Tara are affected by their upbringing, and how events in their family’s past impact upon them in ways they might not even realise.
Because The Lies Between Us is also about the ripple effect, the flap of the butterfly’s wings, the things that happened in our past that had consequences far greater than we could ever grasp. As the three sisters come close to lifting the lid on long-buried secrets, it becomes increasingly clear that not everyone wants history to be uncovered. When Susannah goes missing after acting erratically before a family dinner, a chain of events begins to unfold that forces Lucy, an ex-garda, to investigate her disappearance, and to confront the reasons why she left the force. As the situation escalates, and a woman’s body is washed up in a nearby cove, the rest of the family are drawn into a wider garda investigation which leaves them questioning everything they thought they knew about each other.
The Lies Between Us is a mystery and thriller set in Dunmore East, a coastal village in Waterford where the landscape is so evocative and powerful that it’s easy to see how this family – over different decades and eras – became swept away by the magic of it all, to the detriment of everyone around them.
This is a book, too, about desire and longing, about the violence and tenderness of romantic relationships, about vanity, success, empathy and loyalty. But most of all, it is about the lengths we will go to in order to protect those we love, and the profound ties that bind family.
