- This handbook will both highlight the practices in counseling psychology's traditional areas as well as in new and emerging areas. The field of counseling psychology is characterized by long roots in vocational psychology, prevention, primary interventions, advocacy, and an emphasis on individual differences. The field's fundamental philosophical approach has historically emphasized human strengths, well being, and prevention. Over the years, this approach has led to emerging emphases on cultural context, dimensions of diversity, the role of work in people's lives, and expanded roles for counseling psychologists in new settings, contexts, and with new populations.
- About The Author
- Nadya A. Fouad, PhD, ABPP, is University Distinguished Professor and chair in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin amp ndash Milwaukee. Her primary areas of interest are career development of women and of racial and ethnic minorities, cross-cultural vocational assessment, interest measurement, cross-cultural counseling, and race and ethnicity. She is the director of research for the Center for the Study of the Workplace. Dr. Fouad is editor of The Counseling Psychologist and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Vocational Behavior, Journal of Career Assessment, Journal of Counseling Psychology, and Career Development Quarterly. Dr. Fouad is past president of the Society of Counseling Psychology (APA Division 7), past chair of Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs, and past chair of the Board of Educational Affairs of the APA, and chair of the APA Ethics Committee. She cochaired the Multicultural Guidelines Writing Team (Joint Divisions 7 and 45), which culminated in the adoption of the Multicultural Guidelines as APA Policy in August 2 2. Dr. Fouad earned her doctorate in counseling psychology at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Fouad and her coauthor Romila Singh have recently completed the st year of a National Science Foundation-funded study to understand the barriers and supports for more than 5, women with engineering degrees who did or did not persist in engineering careers. In addition, Dr. Fouad has an active research team that focuses on career development and cultural competence. Among recognition for Dr. Fouad's research and contributions are the following: the Paul Nelson Award (2 ), the APA Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education and Training (2 9), the Janet E. Helms Award for Mentoring and Scholarship (2 9), the School of Education Faculty Research Award (2 7), the APA Division 7 John Holland Award for Outstanding Achievement in Career and Personality Research (2 3), and the Distinguished Service Award, Academy of Counseling Psychology (2 ).
