- Book Synopsis
- The Turpentine Tree employs strong, sensuous imagery to explore displacement, solitude and the search for connection. Drawing on memories from a life uprooted by time spent at sea, widowhood, and loss, she conjures vivid portraits of family, friends and loved ones. Often these recollections are bittersweet, recalling friends and lovers lost, including her later partner, Dannie Abse. From her experiences of loss and solitude come landscapes of silence: atmospheric, rich in emotion, exploratory and questioning. Hjelmgaard's poems reveal uncertainty, loneliness and longing but also celebration. Others take solace from ocean journeys that still inform her present and from what is garnered from the natural world. Celebrating universal themes of love, loss and letting go, this tender collection is a reminder of how it feels to be alive.
- About The Author
- A former art and early childhood teacher, weaver and sailor, Lynne Hjelmgaard, who was born in New York City, has been writing poetry for more than twenty-five years. When her husband, who was Danish, passed away in Copenhagen in 2006, Lynne returned to the countries they had lived in together, including Paris and Rome where she was in residence at the Danish Academy and wrote the poems that later appeared in 'The Ring'. In 2008 she met the poet Dannie Abse. She travelled with him to poetry events, also reading her poems with him. He became her mentor and partner until his death in 2014. She is the author of five poetry collections including 'A Boat Called Annalise' and 'A Second Whisper'.
