— Paul MersonA profoundly personal, warmly nostalgic, and deliciously funny memoir by legendary Sky Sports anchorman Jeff Stelling, Saturday Afternoon Fever chronicles a life spent obsessing over The Beautiful Game. From boyhood days to national fame, it’s all underpinned by his enduring love of football and people.
For a quarter of a century, Jeff Stelling was the face and voice of football on television. As host of Soccer Saturday—a show with National Treasure status—he masterfully led a panel of former footballers as they reacted live to the highs and lows of Saturday’s matches, in front of millions of viewers watching... well, on the telly.
Airing from midday until after the final whistles blew and the players had hit the showers, the show became an unmissable part of match-day rituals across the country. For many fans, the weekend didn’t begin until they’d had their fill of Soccer Saturday.
Saturday Afternoon Fever is Stelling’s moving and fascinating memoir: a love letter to football that has shaped and defined his life—just as it has for millions of fans across the UK. This passionate and engaging tale traces one man's journey from the rain-soaked terraces of Hartlepool’s Victoria Park in the 1960s to the polished studios of Sky Sports, spanning over fifty years of football’s most transformative and thrilling eras.
