- Book Synopsis
-
In the small town of Bonhomie, Ohio, two couples—Cal Jenkins & Becky Hanover and Felix Salt & Margaret—begin lives that will become intertwined by a single act. Unable to serve in WWII due to a physical disability, Cal faces a future of longing and guilt. Becky, blessed with a gift for seances, tries to transcend loss in her own way. Meanwhile, Margaret, raised in an orphanage, and Felix, serving at sea in the Pacific, carry secrets that will shape decades.
As the war ends and America rebuilds, the choices made in summer 1945 still resonate. The families’ children grow, the town changes, and the weight of silence threatens everything they think they know.
Patrick Ryan’s sweeping novel moves from Main Street diners to haunted suburban homes, capturing how desire, disappointment and redemption ripple through lives shaped by duty and escape. _Buckeye_ is an intimate yet grand meditation on belonging, commitment and the unseen costs of the American dream.
