Frankie by Graham Norton

Frankie by Graham Norton

Graham Norton is back with what he does best. Or, maybe second-best, behind being an iconic television presenter.

Frankie is the story of a woman who has never taken centre stage in her own life. It is an immersive story that takes place across multiple decades and is told with Norton’s trademark heart, intelligence and wit. This novel is the story of Frankie’s life, as she tells it to her carer. How she has been on the outside of many interesting events from Ireland, London and New York. Frankie discovers that life doesn’t always go as we hoped. But that can be a blessing.

By Any Other Name by Jodi Picoult

By Any Other Name by Jodi Picoult

Jodi Picoult takes a step outside her usual writing and dips her toes into historical fiction. What if Shakespeare was a woman? We follow Emilia Bassano as she writes plays in 1581, but cannot attach her own name to them. By paying a man to use his name, she writes herself out of the history books. But what choice did women have back then but to accept this?

Contrasting that, we have modern playwright Melina Green but faces the same dilemma. Have we as a society progressed? Or must she also hide behind a male name in order for her works to make it to the stage, and for her voice to be heard? This is a beautifully written, compelling novel about identity.
