- Book Synopsis
- The Cairnryan Military Railway was built in the Second World War to give a rail link to the new military port at Cairnryan. Following the Dunkirk evacuation, there was an urgent need to have ports outwith bomber range, and various locations were considered. Cairnryan military port was built entirely by servicemen to avoid the issues that occurred on Red Clydeside during the First World War, and the seven miles long Cairnryan Military Railway was constructed by Royal Engineers with assistance from the Pioneer Corps. This is a new edition of the book originally published by Stranraer and District Local History Trust in 1999. We have sourced and added some new illustrations and reformatted the book into a landscape style.
