- Book Synopsis
- Now in its 5th edition, this practical handbook was winner of the BMA's "Best new book in primary care" award and is a best-seller in the field of women's health care. The clear, evidence-based text is packed with readily accessible information, interspersed with figures and tables for easy reference in the busy GP surgery. The book covers areas not normally included in standard gynaecology textbooks and will be invaluable for gynaecologists in training, those preparing for the MRCGP, MRCOG and DRCOG examinations, as well as the well-informed lay woman. This new edition has been comprehensively revised to reflect recent developments. All the chapters have been updated or completely rewritten, and new authors have been selected on the basis of their expertise and direct experience of primary care. Each chapter includes a section on the questions patients frequently ask, along with the answers. There are also model consultations on common problems - what a good GP might realistically cover in a ten minute appointment. The chapters include: menstrual problems, vaginal discharge and sexually transmitted infections, cystitis, chronic pelvic pain, infertility and early pregnancy loss, unwanted pregnancy, contraception, breast disorders, eating disorders and complementary medicine - reviewing evidence as it affects women's health. New chapters include: menopause and osteoporosis - with a detailed review of the evidence weighing up the risks and benefits of HRT, premenstrual syndrome, vulval disorders, incontinence, sexual problems, domestic violence, breast, cervical and ovarian cancer screening, familial cancers and health promotion in primary care.
