- Book Synopsis
- The Conservation and Sustainable Development of Architectural and Urban Heritage: Methods, Strategies and Policies offers an interdisciplinary exploration of contemporary strategies for the understanding and conservation of architectural and urban heritage, emphasising sustainability, resilience, and community engagement. This book combines international case studies with theoretical and methodological advances, which illustrate how heritage conservation should evolve to encompass environmental, cultural, and technological aspects collectively. By treating heritage as both a tangible asset and a socio-cultural resource, this book advocates for holistic practices that balance preservation with contemporary needs. Central themes in this book include the response to global pressures, such as climate change, rapid urbanisation, and shifting socio-political contexts, through adaptive reuse, climate-responsive design, and post-disaster planning. Various contributions demonstrate resilience-oriented approaches that safeguard historic environments while advancing sustainable development goals. The role of participatory planning, local communities, and policy frameworks in reinforcing the social value of heritage is highlighted; conveying how place-based initiatives foster identity, urban regeneration, and inclusive growth. Technological innovation features prominently in this book, with several chapters on 3D scanning, parametric modelling, and Building Information Modelling (BIM), technology that enhances documentation, analysis, and conservation approaches. These digital tools not only improve technical precision but also expand opportunities for public involvement and heritage education. In addition, this book highlights non-invasive diagnostic techniques and material analyses that inform conservation decisions and mitigate deterioration, blending traditional craftsmanship with scientific rigour. By bridging theory and practice, tradition and innovation, this book serves as a rich resource for academics, practitioners, and policymakers. It positions heritage not as a static relic but as a dynamic catalyst for sustainable, resilient, and inclusive futures.
