From Ciara Ó hArtghaile, co-owner of Ursa Minor Bakehouse, comes a journey of encouragement through the Celtic seasons; a mixture of memoir, nature writing, recipes and food; a contemporary and original story-cookbook.
This is a book with food at its core, but it is firmly rooted in the turning Celtic wheel and Ciara's home on Ireland's beautiful North Coast. From a childhood of growing vegetables, foraging adventures, family gatherings and home cooked meals, her deep love of food and people is shaped by community, nostalgia and an endless fascination with the landscape. She is led by the seasons, consciously cooking in tandem with what nature provides and aware that her mood and food are shaped by the nuances of change within the weeks and months of our ever-revolving year.
Recipes are lyrically woven together with contemplative stories, prose, stunning imagery and sketches that take you through the Celtic year and its festivals. From pints and music in the pub to out-in-the-wild suppers, from nature observations to garden-pickings suppers and fridge-raid dinners, this book will be inextricably linked to the land and a celebration of being together on this big rock we call home.
- About The Author
- Ciara Ó hArtghaile runs Ursa Minor Bakehouse with her husband Dara on the world-famous Causeway Coast. Dreamers and self-taught bakers, Ciara and Dara returned home penniless from a year of travelling and threw themselves wholeheartedly into starting a business: to offer people real, honest, quality food. Now a multi-award-winning community bakery specialising in local, seasonal produce, Ursa Minor offers classes and events, is a popular stop-off point for day-trippers and has hosted collaborative dinners with some of the best chefs in Ireland including Danni Barry, Robbie McCauley, Jess Murphy and Denis Cotter. Ciara's Substack, Gorse, is read in 32 countries worldwide and was awarded Best Food Blog of 2024 at the Irish Food Writing Awards. Ursa Minor was among the 20 Best Bakeries in the UK, as selected by The Financial Times.
