- About The Author
- Nell obtained her CNM from State University of New York, Downstate University, and her MS in Midwifery from Philadelphia University.'Nell is a midwifery educator, author, and innovator. Nell is committed to reproductive and social justice, improving health equity, and optimizing perinatal health through excellence in midwifery practice. She has been adjunct faculty at Philadelphia University, Thomas Jefferson University, and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.Nell has been involved in birth work since 1977.'She attained her Certified Nurse-Midwife credential in 1986 and practiced full scope midwifery for over two decades before transitioning to teaching and writing. One of her joys of practice was providing primary care to families. As a Certified RN First Assistant, (CRNFA), Nell honed her suturing skills in the operating room, primarily in OB/GYN and General Surgery. Nell began teaching suturing, midwife as first assistant, and perineal repair though in-person and virtual workshops in 1994.Nell's writing and teaching passions are bridging the gaps between clinical practice and emerging evidence, and developing systems and educational programs that improve clinical care and outcomes. Nell is the original author of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Midwifery and Women's Health,'now'Clinical Practice Guidelines for Midwifery & Primary Care. Her current project is establishment of clinical competencies and tools to guide the teaching and learning of the essential skills for assessment and repair of birth-related tissue trauma.
