- Kirby I. Bland, M.D., is Professor Emeritus and Chair Emeritus in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Surgery. An internationally recognized leader in surgical oncology, Dr. Bland has made significant contributions to breast cancer research, translational science, and surgical education. He has served as principal investigator and program leader for multiple National Cancer Institute Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) grants, with research focused on targeted therapies and chemoprevention for breast cancer and melanoma. Dr. Bland has authored or co-authored nearly 600 peer-reviewed publications and authored or edited 44 textbooks, including The Breast: Comprehensive Management of Benign and Malignant Diseases, a leading reference in the field. He has also served as president of numerous national surgical societies, reflecting his longstanding leadership and impact on academic surgery and surgical oncology.
