It was first staged at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, California, in December 1986, and opened on Broadway in November 1987. It went on to win three Tony Awards, including Best Score of a Musical and Best Book of a Musical. This Theatre Communications Group edition includes black and white production photographs by Martha Swope.
