Brian Carroll is an Irish journalist and documentary filmmaker. He has covered the case of Tom and Molly Martens extensively for the Irish Times and was co-producer of ‘A Deadly American Marriage’, the Netflix documentary on the case.
When Limerick widower Jason Corbett hired a wholesome young American, Molly Martens, to care for his two young children, he never imagined the obsession she would develop — or how it would end in his death.
In 2011, Jason and Molly married and settled in North Carolina. Four years later, Jason was found beaten to death in his marital bedroom. Molly and her father, Tom Martens, admitted to killing Jason but claimed self-defence, saying he had a history of domestic abuse.
A Deadly Marriage reveals new information: the strange text Molly sent to Jason’s brother less than two hours after his death; Jason’s plans to return to Ireland just weeks before he died; Tom Martens’ efforts to control the narrative.
With deep on-the-ground reporting, Carroll frames how a wealthy and well-connected family framed a man as the aggressor — and shaped the legal outcome. It’s a chilling, gripping true crime about power, perception and justice.
