The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a story of one woman's ferocious will to escape the horrors of slavery. It is set in the 19th century and follows Cora, the title character who makes a bid for freedom by following the underground railroad. Both beautiful and brutal at times, I would highly recommend this novel.

Songbirds by Christy Lefteri

A little out of my comfort zone, I decided to try this novel and I'm glad that I did. It centers around the disappearance of domestic worker 'Nisha' and the reluctance of the police to get involved on the island of Cyprus. It is a beautifully written book, very thought provoking and one I would highly recommend.
