Ben Hewitt was born and raised in northern Vermont, in a two-room cabin situated on the 165-acre homestead his father purchased in the late 60's. In 1997, he and his then-girlfriend (now wife) Penny purchased 40 undeveloped acres just outside the dairy farming community of Cabot, Vermont. Over the past 17 years, Ben and Penny have transformed the land into a vibrant solar-and-wind-powered homestead, where they raise more than 90% of their nourishment. Their livestock includes a small herd of cows for dairy and beef, pigs, sheep, chickens, and ducks. It also includes two sons, Fin (12) and Rye (9). Ben uses the term
