Eason Spelling Bee 2024 Week 9

And with that, we enter the final week of Spelling Bee County Finals. This is not the end though, after this we invite all the finalists back to represent their county in the Provinicaial Final – and if they win there, they go on to compete in the All-Ireland. We are only getting started.
But, let’s see who the winners were in counties Cavan and Monaghan.

The people of Cavan are always so kind and inviting, and this year was no different. We were welcomed by the lovely people in Farnham National School, and they hosted a fantastic county final. And of course, everyone in Cavan was so eager to compete. We had 13 of the best competitors at this competition, and they really brought their A-game.
The Bee Master and Adjudicator mentioned how impressed they were with the level of talent they witnessed.
Alas, we can only have one winner and from Cavan, that was Nathan Johnstown from St Mary’s National School in Arva.
Nathan went head-to-head with another speller, but succeeded when he correctly spelled ‘abducent’.
We hope Nathan will join us at the Connacht/Ulster final on May 21st.

And then we went to our final County Final in Monaghan. We were hosted by Scoil Mhuire na mBuachaillí in Castleblaney. It was their first time in the competition and they did an excellent job in hosting us.
Their student who took part in the competition did very well, but sadly did not win. He went head-to-head with April Kerins- Brady, who eventually won.
Every one of the 10 competitors did a fantastic job in the competition and we are so so proud of all of them.
Massive congratulations to April, as she won by correctly spelling ‘procrastinate’.

So that is a wrap on the county finals. The Provincial finals will be taking place on May 14th, 16th and 21st.
Best of luck to all the spellers as they move on to the next stages.
