Eason Spelling Bee 2024 Week 7

 

 

 

Spelling bees have always been a fascinating and intellectually stimulating event, showcasing the linguistic prowess of young minds. In this blog post, we highlight the remarkable achievements of three exceptional 12-year-old winners from primary schools in Counties Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo and Roscommon.
Let's delve into their journeys as they step into the world of spelling bees for the first time.

 

Donegal

The Spelling Bee team had a long journey ahead of them, as we headed to Donegal, for the county final which took place in The Great Northern Hotel in Bundoran.
12 hopefuls arrived, ready to spell their way to victory. Some having travelled from the furthest parts of the county for the competition.
Of the 12, one winner emerged. Niamh Quinn from St Patrick’s Girls National School. Niamh is quiet and studious, and loves the Percy Jackson book series. She won by correctly spelling ‘dystopia’ that day.

 

 

Leitrim

Then, we crossed the border into Leitrim and headed to a much more sedate competition. 3 competitors came forward in Leitrim and gave it their all. They all were incredible and we had an amazing competition. The winner was Éanna Ó Ceallaigh from Gaelscoil Liatroma.
Éanna is a lover of sports, and loves swimming and rugby. When he isn’t in the pool or on the pitch, he reads books like David Walliams. We look forward to having Éanna back at the Provinical final.

 

 

Sligo

Then, we headed back up north to Sligo, for the county final. Sligo is always a good competition, and the 9 students who competed gave a great competition on the day. However, as always, there can only be one winner. And the Sligo champion was Grace Shanahan, from St Patrick’s National School Calry. Grace is a sixth class student who loves to read books like ‘The Dork Diaries’. Massive congratulations to Grace, she did a fantastic job.

 

 

Roscommon

We ended the week in Roscommon, where Clodagh Fergus emerged victorious out of the 15 competitors that day.
Clodagh is a student from Ballymurray National School, and we are certain she did her whole school proud by winning the Roscommon county championship. Her winning word was ‘valediction’, and she gave a great valedictory speech.
Congrats Clodagh! We’re sure she will do amazingly well at the Provincial Final this May.

 

 

We want to wish a massive congratulations to all students who will be moving on to the Provincial Finals in May. Everyone fought hard to earn their place and we are so impressed with the level of competency and talent on display from all schools this year.
