Eason Spelling Bee 2024 Week 5

 

 

 

After a short break, in which schools were closed for midterm, the Spelling Bee Team went back on the road, for Week Five of the Eason Spelling Bee county finals. This week, we were in Mayo, Galway, Clare and Limerick for some incredible competitions.

 

Mayo

On Monday, April 8th, the Spelling Bee Team made their way to Mayo for the first of four county finals this week. We were welcomed into Castlebar Primary School where 14 students were eager to compete. The winning student was one from Castlebar Primary School – Stella Mensaite who is a fifth class student. Stella says she owes her massive vocabulary to all the video games she plays. Whoever says games rot your brain is clearly wrong – look at Stella! She won by spelling ‘benefaction’ correctly.

 

 

Galway

Then on April 9th, we made our way to Galway, where the county final was held in the Gaelscoil Iarfhlatha in Tuam. 28 students arrived, ready to face their competitors.
Only one can come out on top, and today it was Benas Navickas from Scoil Mhuire in Moycullen. Benas is a fifth class student and loves to read historical accounts and memoirs. He is incredibly intelligent and we cannot wait to see what he brings to the Provincial in May.

 

 

 

Clare

In Clare, we were hosted by Scoil Chríost Rí in Ennis and they were wonderful. 10 students competed in the Clare county final. Josh Woulfe saved himself from calamity when he correctly spelled it and emerged victorious on April 10th. Josh loves to read books like Skulduggery Pleasant and the Percy Jackson series.
Fingers crossed Josh can keep this streak going, and carry it on to the Provincial Final.

 

 

 

Limerick

Finally, we ended the week in Limerick, in Donoughmore National School on April 11th. 15 students arrived to compete on a lovely bright morning, all ready to give it their all in the competition. Darragh Ryan from Caherconlish National School kept his cool and left a winner. He spelled ‘obsidian’ correctly. Darragh actually is not much of a reader, but loves sports. We hope he will be the champion when he competes next.

 

 

 

 

We want to wish a massive congratulations to all students who will be moving on to the Provincial Finals in May. Everyone fought hard to earn their place and we are so impressed with the level of competency and talent on display from all schools this year.
